Momo Mee is a pan-Asian restaurant located in the Milwaukee area. Ever since the grand opening on December 13, 2018, the establishment has built a positive reputation for itself, winning the Shepard Express’s Best of Milwaukee award on three separate occasions, along with being mentioned by numerous newspapers as a magnificent restaurant time and time again. Our group unanimously decided upon the restaurant after realizing our shared affinity towards Asian cuisine, but we made a pact to do our best to set our biases aside for the sake of a fair and balanced review.
We arrived at 5:30 on a Monday night, immediately noticing that the restaurant was rather busy. Since we made a reservation in advance, we were able to secure a table, but if we hadn’t, it would’ve been impossible to be seated. As the hostess took us back to our table under dim, ambient lighting, the smell of sauces and dishes filled the air. Our waitress arrived shortly with water and menus as we took in our surroundings. The first things we noticed were the seats. While the chairs were moderately comfortable, the booths were admittedly lumpy and hard to settle into. However, the tables were spotless and the restaurant itself was pretty clean overall. After looking over our expansive menus, we decided upon six dishes to taste and rate: the Taiwan Twister, the Tofu Gua Bao, the Xiao Long Bao, the Chicken Fried Rice, the Veggie Cantonese Fried Egg Noodles, and the Fried Mantou.
One of the first dishes to arrive was the Taiwan Twister, a potato cut into thin pieces, skewered, and fried. It came with a pale orange sauce that had a slightly spicy after taste but was rather good. However, the potato itself was only a mediocre starch. It was served slightly cold, and the slices closer to the middle of the skewer weren’t fried at all. Additionally, it was difficult to remove from the stick in one piece. 4.3/10
Another appetizer that arrived alongside the Taiwan Twister was the Tofu Gua Bao. The dish was saturated with flavors, only lacking in hoisin sauce near the vegetables because the tofu had absorbed most of it. The bread had an exciting and unique flavor and stretchy texture. Overall, the dish was quite tasty. 7/10
Our next dish was definitely the most anticipated dish of the entire experience: the Xiao Long Bao. Momo Mee is renowned for its delicious soup dumplings, and we overall agreed that it deserved its specialty status. The meat was very flavorful, the dumplings were filling as a whole, and the sour ginger sauce was both tangy and savory, accentuating the rich flavors of the dumpling when added in small amounts. Our only gripe was surrounding the soup itself, which was pretty bland. While this lack of flavor could have been rectified by adding the ginger sauce, we would have been having sauce instead of soup. 8.3/10
The next dish to arrive was the Chicken Fried Rice. While it is a very simple dish, it says a lot about a restaurant. Momo Mee’s take on the classic did not disappoint. The flavors were balanced and savory, made so by the tender chicken and sauteed vegetables. The egg flavors were brought out in the rice specifically, and they coated the rest of the dish as well. Although the quantity of the vegetables and egg was a bit lacking, we ate this dish in abundance. Some of us even took it to go, so suffice to say we were satisfied by the dish. 9/10
Our next main course was the Veggie Cantonese Egg Fried Noodles, a dish that added a lot to the meal. There was a heap of various vegetables that were well cooked and coated in an egg based sauce. The egg noodles themselves were cooked well, yet some of them became soggy due to the sauce-coated veggies leading to some imbalance in textures. Despite this, the flavors and high quality ingredients contributed to make a great dish. 8.7/10
For dessert, we ordered the Cinnamon Fried Mantou. The bread had a thick texture, and it was covered in a cinnamon sugar coating. There was a serving of condensed milk on the side meant to be a dipping sauce, and the milk’s creamy texture and sweetness complemented the bread well. While the bread was ever so slightly dense, this dish was by far the group favorite. 9.5/10
In the end, we left satisfied on the whole with a flavorful experience under our belts. Momo Mee is most definitely worth the hype; we very much enjoyed our time there!
