You wander along the Milwaukee streets on a crisp October morning, and the light of The Seven Swans Creperie gleams in the distance. It’s the perfect recipe for a fall day: brunch with your friends and festive seasonal flavors. Here are our top picks to have an amazing crepe experience with your new favorite food reviewers!
As we walked in, the bell jingled on the door just like walking into your favorite cafe in Paris. We were greeted by our lovely barista and waitress, who waited as we pondered the choices. We would like to note that she was very patient and cordial as we took several minutes to decide what to order. As we walked into the main dining room, which was a large bright farm-house type vibe with lots of colors, florals, and rustic elements (Ryan would like to note the ‘immense amount of plaid’ as well). The restaurant is renovated from a previous home, which gave an enchanting and cozy atmosphere. Guided by fate, we sat on a bench next to a lovely older woman, who showered us with compliments throughout our meal. We chatted with her a few times throughout our meal, and the restaurant seemed to attract a great group of folks that put up with our loquaciousness.
For our entrées, Laila got the KC Classic, a delightful savory crepe. The contents of the crepe consisted of Bunzel’s smoked ham, the finest, melted swiss cheese, as well as a sprinkle of fresh chives. The arugula within the crepe complimented the diverse flavors in the dish. The whole grain mustard that was placed on top of the crepe tied the whole meal together. The almost bitter taste of the mustard enhanced the fresh, unique taste of the arugula and the rich taste of the ham. Overall, the dish was really delicious and is highly recommended for anyone who chooses to dine at Seven Swans Creperie.
Along with the KC Classic, Laila got the Iced Caramel Latte. The bitter coffee paired along with the sweet caramel creates an amazing morning beverage. The ice made the drink particularly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Laila nearly finished the drink in five minutes due to its delightful taste.
Cat ordered the Apple Crisp Crepe, which is a special on their autumn menu. This sweet crepe mainly consisted of cinnamon, apples, a sweet syrup, candied nuts, and whipped cream. The crepe itself wasn’t as crispy as other options at the restaurant, but the flavor was still good. As for the fillings, the apples were nice and crisp but still juicy. The combination of the light spicing of the apples and sweet syrup created a nice flavor profile. However, the nuts on the crepe were too big (for my taste), and kind of threw off the texture of the dish. The whipped cream, although very fluffy and well made (in the opinion of a whipped cream connoisseur), could have had more vanilla flavoring, as it generally tasted kind of bland. The crepe to topping ratio was a bit off, making the dish taste a bit doughy. Overall, the dish was nice, but other crepes at the restaurant stood out more.
For her drink, Cat got the “Chaider”: a combination of a warm chai latte and apple cider. While the foam on top of the drink was absolutely delicious — with the perfect amount of spiciness, sweet flavor, and milk — the drink was dominated by the apple cider element. There was only a slight taste of any tea flavor, and it lay all within the drinks’ wonderful foam. Nevertheless, the drink was cozy, sweet, spicy, and paired with the Apple Crisp crepe very well.
Ryan ordered the Clean Crepe, a signature sweet crepe. This sweet crepe’s toppings consisted of lavender lemon curd, whipped cream, fresh berries, and candied lemon. The crepe’s components were delicious, though the lemon curd was a tad overpowering. The whipped cream had a subtle flavor, but melted way too quickly. The fresh berries consisted of blueberries that went perfectly with this sugary crepe. Then the final component, the candied lemon tied the dish together giving a much needed tang to the sour elements that were already found in the crepe. Overall, this crepe was wonderfully sweet and decadent; a must get if you want a sweet crepe.
To accompany his dish, Ryan ordered the Brown Sugar Sage Latte from the seasonal menu. Although the latte was sweet, cozy, and generally good, the “sage” part of the latte was virtually missing. It was very much overpowered by the other elements of the drink. The drink also missed components of brown sugar, tasting more bitter. Overall, it did not have the feel and taste of an essential autumn drink. Though it didn’t go well with the Clean crepe, if you tried a savory crepe, the contents would blend together to give you an enjoyable meal.
Overall, our experience at Seven Swans Creperie was impeccable. The food perfectly matched the atmosphere, and the cozy energy of the restaurant made the visit perfect for fall. If you’re ever searching for a quick brunch in the North Shore area, Seven Swans is a great option that is guaranteed to deliver!
