Game commemorates late student

The girls volleyball team held the “Live Like Megan” memorial game on Tuesday, October 8th, in honor of Megan Frieseke, who passed away last spring. The players wore jerseys with Frieseke’s number, 32, on the back before their game against West Allis Central. They won the game, a goal they said they were hoping to achieve for their friend and teammate.

Emily Frieseke, senior and Megan’s twin sister, watched from the stands with her friends and family surrounding her. Emily also played volleyball during her previous years of high school, but is recovering from her injuries and the loss of her sister. Brian Frieseke, her older brother and girls volleyball coach, honored his sister’s memory from the sidelines by placing her jersey on an empty chair.

The idea to hold a game in Megan’s honor first came about as they considered ways in which her interests were connected to the community.

“Megan and I have been playing volleyball together since 5th grade, so it’s been a really big part of mine and Megan’s life, and we thought it would be a good idea to honor her in something that she loved,” Emily Frieseke said.

According to Sofia Fardella, senior, their victory was fueled love for their teammate.

“Well, last night, our main goal was to win,” Fardella said. “We all knew Megan, we all had a connection with her, and I think winning was a big thing for us, because it was her night.”

The ticket sales benefitted the Frieseke family.

“[The fundraisers] always mean a lot and show how many people are there for my family,” Emily Frieseke said.

The event also hoped to remind all in attendance of the values Megan had in life.

“‘Live Like Megan’ means to be who you are, no matter who you’re around. Megan would dance and laugh like no one else was watching. I really admired that,” said Charlotte Lehman, senior.

Lehman also remembers her kindness.

“She brought everyone’s mood up, and was extremely inclusive. She gave everyone a friend,” she said.

For Emily, Megan embodied the spirit of joy and love through her big heart and contagious laughter.

“Her favorite song was ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen, and that song says that you have to live each day like it’s your last,” she said. “Megan did that. She never took life for granted, and she loved living life, so that’s what ‘Live Like Megan’ means.”
